How to do it
GFCI outlets cut power in a fraction of a second when they sense current leaking, which is what prevents electrocution near water. The protection degrades with age, and the only way to know it still works is the test button.
- At each GFCI outlet (kitchens, baths, garage, outdoors), press TEST; the RESET button should pop and power should cut.
- Confirm the outlet is dead with a plugged-in lamp or tester.
- Press RESET to restore power and confirm the lamp comes back.
- Replace any GFCI that won't trip on TEST or won't reset.
Alternatives & optional extras
- One GFCI can protect several downstream regular outlets; test the GFCI and confirm the protected ones also cut.
- Newer combination GFCI/AFCI breakers in the panel test from the panel instead; check monthly all the same.
